Refugee Youth: Strengths, Challenges, Barriers, and Factors that Influence Integration

Description: Refugee students bring with them a unique set of experiences that influence their academic and social integration in the US, and educators and after school support providers have a distinct opportunity to play a large role in their success. This session will cover the strengths, challenges, and extra barriers that impact refugee students, including academic and social factors both in person and virtually.

Takeaways:

  • A greater understanding of the terms surrounding immigration, including the difference between refugee, asylee, immigrant, etc. status. 

  • Gain awareness of how to best support refugee students and specific considerations when doing so.
