Date: Wednesday, February 17, 2021
Time: 10am-12pm
Location: Via Zoom
Facilitator: Andrew Kramer, Manager of Learning and Development, USOPC
Description:
This session will address:
The difference between gender and sexuality: LGBT isn’t just one thing - there are many identities within ‘the alphabet.’ Know the difference and how to use inclusive language when you’re talking about a community vs. an individual person
The power of pronouns: What prevents us from using correct pronouns and names? What impact does this have on folks who identify outside of a binary?
Learning on vs. learning from: Everything we know about social interaction we’ve learned by messing up on someone else. It’s natural to learn through observation, inquiry, successes and failures. That said, it is ‘unfair’ and outdated to rely on marginalized persons to provide you an education based on their lived experience.
Living stealth vs. living privately: Not all queer or trans folks want to lead the pride parade. In some cases being ‘out’ is unsafe, uncomfortable, or just not wanted. The best thing an ally forward company can do is to normalize all types of identities and relationships. Don’t pressure folks to join ERGs. Don’t ‘out’ people. There is a difference between showing mutual respect and overcompensating to prove your allyship.
